FIELD GUIDE

The story

Everett's Muffler Man is a 20-foot fiberglass figure in jeans and a blue-collared shirt, standing on a rooftop above Hewitt Avenue, and for years he has been looking down on the street near West Marine View Drive.

The Everett Herald reported in 2020 that he has been on the roof since 1983, when a downtown tire shop moved to the building and had no room for him on the sidewalk. According to that account the shop closed soon afterwards and the figure stayed with the building. A 2014 Herald column gives a slightly different version, saying the statue arrived with a muffler shop that leased space in the building. Either way, he is wired to the roof, and the Herald says his shoes are about four feet long.

He is one of the Muffler Men, a family of fiberglass giants. The Herald, citing Roadside America, says the line began in the 1960s with a Paul Bunyan figure promoting a restaurant and grew into a range made by a California company, later repurposed as pirates, cowboys, astronauts and more. Everett's has had some costume changes: the Herald reported that he holds a blue flag during Seahawks season, and in August 2020 he was fitted with a custom face mask, stitched from outdoor fabric by a local awning company. The Herald also reported that spikes were fixed to his head and arms to deter seagulls.

The building has housed SSA Marine, a stevedoring office that hires dockworkers, for around 25 years as of 2020. In late 2023 the Muffler Man was one of the sites featured in the 2024 Historic Everett calendar.

He is best seen from the street, since the building houses a working office.
