The story

A model Stegosaurus was installed at the front of Cranbrook Institute of Science in 1980, and in 2013 someone dressed it for the occasion. The Institute's own timeline records that a model Stegosaurus was installed in front of the building in 1980 to commemorate the museum's 50th anniversary. The museum itself dates to 1930, and its Eliel Saarinen-designed building was dedicated in 1938.
Steggy made the news on Monday 16 September 2013. According to a 2013 Yahoo News report, staff arrived to find Steggy wearing leggings, an eye patch, spike and plate scrunchies, tail bracelets and an orange cap with a pompom on its tail. A woman identifying herself only as Jenn had dressed Steggy overnight and left a letter. She wrote that Steggy had inspired her childhood love of science, and that as a girl she was teased for liking paleontology. The Institute's director, Michael Stafford, said in a statement that its mission was to inspire a love of science and clearly that had happened with Jenn. The Institute said the outfit would stay on until the following Sunday and might be displayed on special occasions after that.
