FIELD GUIDE
The story
Ōamaru has committed to steampunk more thoroughly than any town has a right to, and the giant recycled-metal motorbike outside Steampunk HQ is part of the evidence.
The aesthetic – Victorian machinery imagined forward into a future that never happened, all brass, rivets, gauges and improbable boilers – found an unusually good home here. Ōamaru's Victorian precinct is one of the most complete nineteenth-century commercial streetscapes anywhere, built in white local limestone during the town's brief boom as a wool and grain port. A movement obsessed with an alternative Victorian era arrived in a town that still physically is one.
