FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 90-foot figure of Hanuman rises above a Hindu temple on the edge of Sugar Land, and it is a place of worship first and a sight second. The Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple has a Sugar Land address but lies in Houston's extra-territorial jurisdiction, so the City of Houston issued its permits, Houston Public Media reported in 2024.
The statue shows Hanuman, the deity who in the Ramayana helped rescue Rama's kidnapped wife, as a human figure with a monkey's face and palms turned forward. Houston Public Media reported that it was designed in India by Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji, with the parts made in China, shipped to the United States and assembled at the temple. It weighs 90 tons, and the temple's president called 90 "an auspicious number". According to the temple's website, as summarised by Brut in 2026, the name Statue of Union refers to Hanuman's part in reuniting Rama and Sita.
