FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Town of Vulcan's attractions page describes a replica of the Starship Enterprise in the Alberta town of Vulcan. The Town of Vulcan calls it the Vulcan Star ship FX6-1995-A, "a replica of the original Star ship Enterprise", officially unveiled on 10 June 1995. The town says the name comes from the Vulcan airport identifier "FX6" in the Canadian Flight Supplement, and that the "A" marks the first project launched in pursuit of the Science and Trek theme. A photo caption on the town's attractions page describes the ship as standing on a stone pedestal, and the town's history page calls it a replica of the Enterprise from Star Trek V.
The town's own account of its name is plain: it "did not get its name from science fiction". Its history page says a CPR surveyor named the town in 1910 after the Roman god of fire, while Travel Alberta gives 1913 as the founding year. The town says it has become a worldwide known tourist attraction with the building of a Star Trek themed tourist centre. That centre, the Trek Station, was designed to look like a landed spaceship, and its official grand opening was on 23 October 1998. Travel Alberta says it handles the normal visitor centre functions and houses a Star Trek museum, at 115 Centre Street East.
