FIELD GUIDE
The story
A seated stone woman, 16 feet tall, holds a small marble star between her fingers on the River Walk. Stargazer (Citlali) by the Mexican artist Pedro Reyes was unveiled by the City of San Antonio in March 2022. It was built from more than 80 pieces of Mexican volcanic stone, with the star in marble, on a base 5 feet tall, according to KSAT. The City of San Antonio's Department of Arts and Culture commissioned it as the signature public art project of the 2017 municipal bond, the San Antonio Report said. It was placed at the fork where the river extension splits between The Shops at Rivercenter and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, facing west.
The city's release said Citlali means star in Nahuatl, the indigenous language of Mexico City, Reyes's hometown. Reyes said he made the star form purposely ambiguous: it could be a flint tool or arrowhead found locally, a fossilised shell from the region's deeper history under the ocean, or a star like the ones that shine over San Antonio each night (KSAT). He said the work represents San Antonio's founding and offers, in his words, a timeless perspective. San Antonio Current reported that he was originally inspired by the city's tricentennial celebrations.
