FIELD GUIDE

The story

Stanley is eighteen metres of emu made out of Volkswagen Beetles and satellite dishes.
The Lightning Ridge artist John Murray built him from old Beetles, dishes and steel, and the material list is not incidental – it is the aesthetic of the whole town. Lightning Ridge is an opal-mining settlement in far north-western New South Wales where the landscape is white mullock heaps and the built environment is largely improvised from whatever came to hand. Astronomers Monument, Amigo's Castle, the bottle houses: the district has a deep tradition of building substantial things out of salvage.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Current Walgett tourism promotes Stanley as a major Lightning Ridge roadside landmark near the Castlereagh Highway turnoff; specialist Big Things coverage independently documents the sculpture.
ACCESS
Navigate to the mapped Lightning Ridge Rest Area beside Stanley rather than stopping on the Castlereagh Highway. The surface parking area is about 100 metres southwest of the sculpture; use the rest-area pedestrian approach.
