FIELD GUIDE
The story
Drivers leaving the Will Rogers Turnpike for Big Cabin, Oklahoma, find a statue of Chief Standing Brave outside a truck stop. According to Oklahoma's official tourism site, artist Wade Leslie began a scale model in the fall of 2000, then built the full statue from steel pipe, rebar, wire mesh and expanding insulation foam. After the features were carved into the foam, it was fibreglassed, sanded, primed and painted. It was completed in the spring of 2001 and placed upright on 9 August 2001. TravelOK gives its height as 46 feet, or over 50 feet with the base, and its weight as over 15,000 pounds, and says it took 801 hours to build. Oklahoma Magazine called it 50 feet tall and put the headdress at 100 feathers, whereas TravelOK counts 105 feathers in the headdress and 37 on the spear. A Taking the Kids article from June 2026 headlines it as 48 feet tall but gives 46 feet in its text. The shield includes the Oklahoma state flag. Oklahoma Magazine reported in 2023 that the statue is roughly modelled on a similar roadside figure in Maine, and, citing the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, that the truck stop's original owner first tried to buy the Maine statue and then had a similar one built. The Woodshed's manager told the magazine it is the first thing drivers see on leaving the turnpike and that people photograph it all the time. The statue is outside the Woodshed truck stop on US 69, in a town Oklahoma Magazine places two miles south of the turnpike; TravelOK says it can be photographed around the clock and lists free admission. As it is at a working truck stop, park with care away from trucks and fuel lanes.
