FIELD GUIDE

The story

Spineway was built as a gateway: a riveted aluminium structure of interlocking arches at the corner of Cincinnati Avenue and Josephine Tobin Drive, by the main entrance to Woodlawn Lake Park in San Antonio. Marc Fornes designed it with his studio THEVERYMANY, which is based in New York and Strasbourg, France. The City of San Antonio commissioned it through its 2012 Bond Public Art Plan, and in 2015 the city's Department for Culture & Creative Development director Felix N. Padrón called it the home of Fornes's first outdoor public art installation in the country. Dezeen described it in 2016 as his first permanent installation in the United States.
According to the studio, the structure is made of 1,009 aluminium shingles, each one-eighth of an inch thick, fastened with 19,429 rivets. It stands 20 feet high, 63 feet wide and 26 feet deep, and touches the ground on 12 precast concrete feet set on a 280-square-foot pad. A team of four assembled the prefabricated parts over five days. The studio gives its completion as July 2015. SA Current, reporting the unveiling, called it roughly 70 feet wide.
