FIELD GUIDE
The story
Spindle was dedicated in 2019 in the Village of West Greenville. According to WSPA in April 2019, it was the fourth sculpture Artisphere had dedicated and the first for that neighbourhood. Artisphere's sculpture page says it was dedicated in honour of the festival's 15th anniversary, and the work is by artist Blessing Hancock. WSPA described it as twenty feet tall and made of over 200 words in steel that Hancock collected from festival-goers; Hancock's own site lists stainless steel with programmable LED lighting, 23 feet by 5 feet in diameter, that projects the community's language onto the surrounding plaza. Hancock told WSPA she was inspired by the nearby Brandon Mill and Greenville's former life as the “textile capital of the world.” WSPA's April 2019 report located it at the plaza between The Anchorage and Community Journals. Artisphere's sculpture page and Visit Greenville SC's public art walking tour both list Spindle.
