FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant sombrero tops the observation tower at South of the Border, on the North Carolina-South Carolina line. In December 2025, WUNC News reported that the owners were selling 30 acres of the complex, including the Pedroland amusement park, but keeping what it called the unusual sombrero observation tower, along with the reptile lagoon, souvenir stores and restaurants. The tower has a ground-floor arcade and elevator rides to an observation deck.
Size depends on the source. Route Magazine describes a two-hundred-foot tower topped by a giant sombrero, and TIME gave 200 feet in 2010, adding that locals call it “The Eiffel Tower of the South”. South Carolina Living, in 2013, reported a 300-foot tower and a $1 glass-elevator ride from the arcade. The South Carolina Encyclopedia calls it twenty-two storeys.
