Sir Lancelot Brussels Sprout – Ohakune

The Brussels sprout is the boldest choice in the group. It is the most reliably disliked vegetable in the English-speaking world, the subject of more childhood complaint than any other, and giving it a name from Arthurian legend is a considerably better response than pretending it is popular. Sir Lancelot is being defended rather than sold.

There is a horticultural case for it too. Brassicas do well in the cool volcanic soils on the southern side of Ruapehu, and sprouts are a genuine winter crop in this kind of country – so the sprout belongs in the district's vegetable line-up alongside the carrots and swedes even if it will never be the headline.

The park's whole method is on display here. Give each vegetable a name and a character, aim squarely at children, and let the affection accumulate. A row of anatomically correct giant vegetables would be a display; a swede called Crimson King and a sprout called Sir Lancelot are a cast list, and children remember cast lists.
