FIELD GUIDE

The story

Nine life-size fiberglass dinosaurs stood in Sinclair Oil's Dinoland at the 1964 to 1965 New York World's Fair, and one of them, a Stegosaurus, is listed by Sinclair as being at Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. Sinclair says the figures were designed by wildlife sculptor Louis Paul Jonas, took three years to build and travelled by barge 125 miles down the Hudson River to the fair. A 2018 conference paper by a Texas Parks and Wildlife historian, hosted on the National Park Service site, records that three of the nine, the Stegosaurus among them, had mechanised parts and, as of 2018, also places the Stegosaurus there; Sinclair says the animatronics were removed before the national tour that followed the fair.
Sinclair's company history places the Stegosaurus at Dinosaur National Monument in Jensen, Utah, and says a copy is at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The National Park Service's visitor-centre page, last updated in September 2022, says a stegosaurus statue stands outside the Quarry Visitor Center on the Utah side of the monument. The fossil wall itself is in a separate building, the Quarry Exhibit Hall.
