The story
Secretariat never raced in Lexington, but in 2019 a bronze of him was set in the middle of a roundabout on the road into town. LEX 18 reported that the statue, with jockey Ron Turcotte aboard, was unveiled at Keeneland on Saturday 12 October 2019 and set in place at the roundabout of Old Frankfort Pike and Alexandria Drive on Monday 14 October. The Triangle Foundation, based in Lexington, commissioned it from sculptor Jocelyn Russell, who told Kentucky Educational Television she received the call in June 2018.
Russell, described by KET and WKYT as Washington-based, said she studied photographs and video and spent time with Turcotte, who recounted each Triple Crown race to her. Her 20-inch maquette went to a foundry in Norman, Oklahoma, where it was scaled up in foam, finished by her in clay, then cast in bronze and patinated; the sculpture then travelled about 900 miles to Lexington. Turcotte could not attend the installation, but his brother did.
