FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Newfoundland who escorted Lewis and Clark to the Pacific has his own monument beside the Missouri River in Washburn, close to where the expedition wintered with the Mandan people in 1804 to 1805.
The sculpture is the work of North Dakota artist Tom Neary, who also made the 12-foot statues of Lewis, Clark and the Mandan chief Sheheke outside the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Prairie Public's Dakota Datebook says Seaman was installed in June 2006 and describes it as 1,400 pounds and six feet tall. The State Historical Society of North Dakota calls it bronze and, after staff measured it in 2022, gives a height of 7 feet and a head circumference of nearly 8 feet. North Dakota Tourism calls it a heroic-sized steel sculpture. The blog's author suggests it may be the largest sculpture of a Newfoundland the author could find, comparing a cast of about 6 feet at Sioux City and St. Charles; that is the author's own informal survey, not an official record.
