FIELD GUIDE
The story
General Sam Houston has pointed toward the San Jacinto battleground from the entrance of Hermann Park since 1925. The Houston Arts Foundation calls the bronze equestrian statue the most iconic work of civic art in Houston.
The monument stands in the traffic circle inside the park's entrance at Montrose and Main. According to the Houston Arts Foundation, the Women's Club of Houston commissioned sculptor Enrico Filiberto Cerrachio to create a monument honouring Houston as founder, first president and first governor of Texas. Hermann Park Conservancy credits the Women's City Club with funding it. The statue was unveiled on 16 August 1925.
