FIELD GUIDE
The story
Trinity Heights, on the north side of Sioux City, was built around statues that are visible across its grounds, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the larger of the two. Trinity Heights says it stands 33 feet tall and dominates the western part of the grounds. It looks over the Outdoor Cathedral, which includes the Stations of the Cross, the Way of the Saints, the Eight Beatitudes, the Apparitions of Mary and the Veterans' Memorial Tribute. A 2016 Sioux City Journal feature describes the steel statues as 30 feet tall, so the figures differ. The sculptor is Dale Lamphere of Spearfish, South Dakota, who also made the Immaculate Heart of Mary Queen of Peace statue, dedicated in 1993. According to the Trinity Heights timeline, the Sacred Heart statue was placed in 1999, across the grounds from the outstretched hand of the Immaculate Heart. The site grew from an idea of Father Harold Cooper, then pastor of St. Joseph Church, who in 1985 conceived a statue of the Immaculate Heart and incorporated Queen of Peace, Inc. to pursue it. The grounds sit on the site of the former Trinity College and high school. In 2016 the Sioux City Journal reported that the steel is cleaned with a power washer every five years. Trinity Heights does not allow pets other than service animals, skateboards, roller skates or bikes, and it asks visitors not to be loud.
