FIELD GUIDE
The story
One of the survivors of a statewide tourism stunt, Red Hot Potato stands outside a lighting manufacturer in Warwick. According to WPRI-TV in November 2024, the 6-foot-tall fiberglass Mr. Potato Head statues date back to 2000, when the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation teamed up with Hasbro for the 'Birthplace of Fun' tourism campaign. The 47 statues were designed by local artists and dispersed across the state, partly to attract visitors and partly to set locals a year-long scavenger hunt. WPRI found that most have since been donated, sold or vandalized, but that more than half remain.
This one sits right outside the entrance of Day-O-Lite, an LED light manufacturer. WPRI described it as weathered and worn, and wrote that it still greets drivers who can see it from I-95 North as well as people visiting the company. It stands on a working business's premises, so please respect the property.
