This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 20-foot-tall, 40-foot-long roadrunner sculpture built entirely from recycled materials sourced from the Las Cruces landfill (old shoes, cell phones, bike parts, and more) by local artist Olin Calk, completed 1993. It briefly held the world-record title for largest roadrunner statue, surpassing Paisano Pete of Fort Stockton, Texas -- fitting timing, since the roadrunner is New Mexico's official state bird. Now sited at a rest area on I-10 westbound between mile markers 134 and 135, west of Las Cruces. (Fort Stockton reclaimed the Guinness title in 2022 with a 22-ft statue, though the Las Cruces bird's 40-ft length still exceeds it.)
