FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Encyclopedia of Arkansas describes a twelve-foot raven statue in Ravenden, a small Lawrence County town in north-east Arkansas. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas, updated in 2026, calls it perhaps the most striking feature of the town.
According to the encyclopedia, the first raven was constructed off the highway in 1991. Vandals have burned the statue twice, and the present raven was built in 1996. KAIT reported in 2018 that the statue had been finished in 1991 and burned after about a year and a half, and that the town did not plan a second rebuild until a woman from Jonesboro called to say she wanted to see it rebuilt. The station added that a local fundraising drive in 2018 aimed to rebuild it because the material was deteriorating, and the mayor said it was in poor condition.
