A 25-foot, 5,000-pound fiberglass statue of Ramesses II, built in 1991 with special permission of the Egyptian government, originally stood at the entrance to Memphis's Pyramid arena downtown. When the Pyramid was converted into a Bass Pro Shops megastore, the statue was moved on April 24, 2012 to the University of Memphis campus (between the theater and music buildings, off Central Avenue), where the City of Memphis now leases it to the university for $1 a year for 99 years, as a symbol of the university's Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology.
