FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 1908 railway bridge, painted in rainbow colours, standing in a paddock as a sculpture.
The sixteen-metre bow-string bridge was built in the Petone workshops – which operated from 1876 to 1929 – and installed at Trentham in the Hutt Valley. It was raised several inches in 1954 in connection with the electrification of the line, a detail that fixes it precisely within the history of New Zealand railways rather than leaving it as generic old ironwork.
