FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 40-foot covered wagon with Abraham Lincoln on the wagon seat sits beside old Route 66 in the town that took his name. The Railsplitter Covered Wagon stands on the front lawn of the Best Western Lincoln Inn at 1750 5th Street, Lincoln, Illinois. According to Guinness World Records it is the largest covered wagon: 40 feet long, 12 feet wide and 25 feet tall, hand built from Illinois oak and steel by David R. Bentley in 2001. Guinness says it was built to mark the 75th anniversary of Route 66, and that a 12-foot fibreglass Lincoln sits on the wagon seat. Enjoy Illinois, the state tourism office, gives the height as 24 feet and says the figure is reading a law book.
The Logan County Tourism Bureau explains the choice of subject: Lincoln often travelled to the town as a circuit-riding lawyer on the 8th Judicial Circuit. The tourism bureau says the wagon was donated to it in January 2007; Guinness says the bureau bought it that year from the builder and moved it from Pawnee to Route 66.
