FIELD GUIDE
The story
A bull's head the park's website gives as sixty feet tall rises at Montrose, in view of Interstate 90, and around it a self-taught welder has spread more than sixty steel sculptures across the prairie. Porter Sculpture Park is the work of Wayne Porter, who grew up around his father's blacksmith shop in St. Lawrence. According to the park's website, he made his first sculpture, a small bull's head, at ten, learned to weld at twelve, and later sold his sheep to sculpt full time. When land became available at Montrose, he moved his sculptures there.
Porter works without diagrams or equations. The website says he built the bull's head in two parts without testing the fit, and that when a crane lifted the ears into place they fitted perfectly. He told the Mitchell Republic in 2024 that his favourite material is one-eighth-inch steel, and the paper reported that his sculptures are usually made from scrap metal, discarded farm machinery and railroad ties. It described a 10-acre park with over 50 of his works and a self-guided loop trail a third of a mile long, accessible by golf cart.
