FIELD GUIDE
The story
Pierre the Voyageur has a nickname that tells you the first thing you will notice: some call him Pierre the Pantsless Voyageur. He is a 20-foot fiberglass fur-trade paddler with a black beard and a canoe paddle, and he greets traffic on Highway 61 at the edge of Two Harbors on Minnesota's North Shore.
He went up around 1960 in front of a new Voyageur Motel and Museum. The Duluth News Tribune reported in 2010 that the 20-foot figure was an advertisement for the business, built in the late-1950s boom of drivers looking for roadside curiosities. A worker hidden in a booth spoke through a speaker, his head swivelled, his eyes lit up, and a machine next to him dispensed souvenir coins. Northern News Now said in 2025 that children bought a token to hear him talk, and that he was meant to rival the moving, talking Paul Bunyan statue in Brainerd.
