Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, at 1020 South Street, is a mosaic art environment made by Isaiah Zagar, with two indoor galleries and a two-level outdoor sculpture garden of tile, bottles and bicycle wheels. A nonprofit formed after a 2004 sale threat preserves it as a ticketed museum.

FIELD GUIDE
The story
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens shows what one artist can do with handmade tile, bottles and bicycle wheels, and how close the result came to being torn down.
The museum stands at 1020 South Street, between 10th and 11th Streets. Isaiah Zagar and his wife Julia were part of a 1970s revival of the neighbourhood that the museum calls the "South Street Renaissance", which followed a coalition's success in stopping a planned expressway in 1974. Julia opened the Eye's Gallery on South Street, and over five decades Isaiah mosaicked more than 200 public walls, according to the museum.
