The story

Pequot Lakes advertises itself with the slogan "Find the bobber ... You're there!", and the bobber in question is a retired water tower.
The Pine and Lakes Echo Journal reports that the tower was built in 1960 with a 50,000-gallon tank and was replaced as the town's working tower in 1999 by one on Pillsbury Street. It gained its look in 1987. According to the paper's 2017 history, a council member suggested changing the colour from blue, and the local editor proposed painting it as the world's largest bean kettle, a nod to Bean Hole Days. The cost of the artwork and a fear of bad publicity led the town to a simpler idea, a fishing bobber, and the Chamber ran a design contest. A fourth-grader's drawing won. Maguire, a Sioux Falls firm, painted the tower, and the Echo Journal says it was the most ornate tower the company had done. The city agreed to pay $5,300 and the Chamber, American Legion and Woman's Club raised a further $3,000.
