This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
Pee Dee, the East Carolina University mascot since 1983, is depicted in a 13-foot-tall, three-ton cast-bronze statue on a concrete base at the corner of Founders Drive and Faculty Way on ECU's campus mall in Greenville, North Carolina. The swashbuckling pirate figure wears a tricorn hat and tall cuffed boots, stands with one foot on a mound of cannonballs, and brandishes a sword beside a small cannon. Installed on the mall in 2008, the statue has twice needed repair and restoration after being stolen in 2014 and vandalized in 2021.
