FIELD GUIDE
The story
A carpenter's yard in Washington County, Wisconsin, has become an outdoor gallery of welded metal sculptures that the public can walk through. Paul Bobrowitz's Spectacular Sculpture fills about six acres in the Holy Hill area, around 30 minutes northwest of Milwaukee, according to his own website and the SPACES Archives, which records folk art environments.
Bobrowitz started in the late 1980s, the Shepherd Express reported in 2023, when he wanted a hobby beyond building purely useful things and used his welding skills to make art. SPACES gives the start as the early 1990s and says he took up sculpture full-time in 1995. His first piece, Piano Man, was still in the yard in 2023, the Shepherd Express reported. He made it from the soundboard of a piano he found in a barn he was taking down.
