FIELD GUIDE
The story
Two stainless steel eagles by sculptor Albert Paley sit above the Belvedere at the end of American Way, National Harbor’s main thoroughfare, appearing to soar over the Potomac River, according to National Harbor’s art guide. It gives their wingspans as 14 feet and the poles as 60 feet high, and describes two 4,500-pound eagles. Paley’s studio website dates the work to 2008, lists it as formed and fabricated stainless steel measuring 71 feet high, 16 feet wide and 7 feet deep, and says the two sculptures were created for the main plaza area of the National Harbor complex. They sit above a terrazzo mural by Steven Weitzman. WTOP reported in 2019 that the eagles are among the works on National Harbor’s self-guided Guide by Cell phone tour; National Harbor now gives the number to text as (301) 747-0466 with the word ACNH.
