FIELD GUIDE

The story

A three-storey stainless-steel Virgin Mary now stands in northwest Indiana after a journey that was supposed to end in Chicago. The shrine describes it as more than 33 feet tall and four tons; WBEZ (2011) and the Chicago Catholic (2018) both gave 34 feet, and the Chicago Catholic gave a weight of 8,400 pounds.
WBEZ reported in 2011 that the statue was made in 1999 and had since toured Catholic parishes and tourist sites, including Chicago's Navy Pier. It was originally meant to be installed in Chicago; instead the artist's widow settled on an Indiana location. WBEZ said it was placed first in the parking lot of St. John the Evangelist Church, with a move to the Shrine of Christ's Passion expected about a year later. The statue spent about two years at the parish before being installed at the shrine, according to a 2018 Chicago Catholic report. WBEZ noted that the shrine already had a marble Marian statue, erected in the 1950s.
