FIELD GUIDE
The story
Every roadside giant needs a story, and Otis has an easy one: a 25-foot sasquatch who has settled onto a fishing dock at a lakeside cabin resort and seems perfectly content to wait for a bite. According to the operator's website, he stands at French Lick Cabins at Patoka Lake, about ten minutes from French Lick in southern Indiana.
The Bear Hollow Wood Carvers built him in April 2023. Limestone Post reported in May 2024 that a nine-person team worked on site for about four days, although Travel Indiana's April 2023 announcement said five days. The frame is treated lumber from a local supplier. Twelve bundles of poplar sawmill slabs form the fur, and solid white-pine logs make the face and feet. Limestone Post said the carvers spent about six months planning before the build, and that the idea was a relaxed, smiling sasquatch dipping a fishing pole into the lake. The dock bends under his weight and a red-and-white bobber hangs from the line.
