FIELD GUIDE

The story

Eli's Orange World began as a Texaco station. Wikipedia says Eli Sfassie moved from Indiana to Florida to open it near Walt Disney World when the park opened in 1971, and he began selling souvenirs from the service bay.
Wikipedia says the building was converted to look like an orange in 1988 at a cost of $6,000, and that Sfassie billed it as the "world's largest orange". It gives the height as 60 feet. Roadarch describes a fiberglass-domed building constructed in 1973, 92 feet wide and 60 feet tall, a date that differs from Wikipedia's. Roadside America describes half-domed citrus architecture at 5395 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway.
