FIELD GUIDE

The story

Gore's original giant guitar was put up on Trade Me.
The six-metre sculpture once stood in the centre of town on the main road, advertising the Gold Guitar Awards – the national country music competition that has run in Gore since the 1970s and made a Southland town of twelve thousand the genre's capital. It was created by the sculptor Erroll Allison, the same man who made Gore's leaping brown trout just under fifty years ago, which gives one artist responsibility for both of the town's defining objects.
