The story

Ocho is a 20-foot octopus perched over the restrooms at Jessie Andrews Park in Austin's Mueller development. CultureMap Austin reported on 11 November 2020 that the park had just opened, and that the sculpture was the third Mueller piece by artist Dixie Friend Gay, after Nessy in what was then called Lake Park (now Girard Kinney Park) and a giant spider in the Southwest Greenway.
The artist's own page lists it as a 2020 work in steel, glass, mosaic and painted foam, about 20 feet high and 30 by 30 feet, fabricated with Blue Genie Art Industries and others. She describes it as part menacing monster, part Jules Verne creation, with LED lights behind the eyes. CultureMap describes forged metal coated in colour-shift paint meant to mimic how octopuses camouflage themselves. Friend Gay told CultureMap she drew on 1950s and 1960s creature films such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Mysterious Island, a nod to the nearby Austin Studios film studio.
