The story
Vining takes about 30 seconds to drive through, and WCCO's Finding Minnesota series said in 2022 that there is a lot to see in that time. Ken Nyberg, who grew up in the area and worked as a foreman for Volden Construction building grain elevators, began making scrap-metal sculptures in the 1980s, according to Explore Minnesota. He retired in 1999 after 43 years in construction.
Big Foot, which Explore Minnesota dates to 1991 and calls the identifying landmark of the town, is 12 feet high and weighs 1,200 pounds, according to WCCO, which places it on the west side of town. Nyberg told the station he had made a sculpture for a friend about forty years earlier, and the town went on to create a park around his work. WCCO counted about 30 sculptures a decade before its 2022 visit and over 100 by then, among them an elephant built from lawnmower blades, pliers with a cockroach on top and a doorknob with no door. Nyberg also has sculptures in nearby Henning. A Geocaching blog post of 11 November 2024 describes five different sculptures in the park, including the elephant.
