FIELD GUIDE
The story
A tall red obelisk beside a pedestrian bridge is one of the best-known pieces in Denver's public art collection, and Denver Arts & Venues described it to CPR News in 2018 as one of the most talked about. National Velvet, by Denver artist John McEnroe, was installed in 2008 next to a pedestrian bridge. Denver Public Art lists it as a 20-foot obelisk in two parts: an aluminium base and a red fibreglass sculpture. It won the People's Choice Award for best new public art in 2008, according to that listing.
The city held a block party for it in 2014. Viewers have compared it to raw beef, sausage links or intestines. McEnroe has said it “does not represent anything”, describing it instead as an abstract work “born out of a studio process” and “a traditional object, an obelisk, made in a non-traditional way”.
