Sachs Butterfly House Monarch

The founder of St. Louis's City Museum left a giant resting monarch butterfly in a county park, outside the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Faust Park, Chesterfield.

The Missouri Botanical Garden, which operates the Butterfly House, says the 28-foot-tall butterfly was created by St. Louis sculptor Bob Cassilly and given to the Butterfly House as a gift. It stands among seasonal gardens, and the Garden calls it a good photo opportunity for families. The Regional Arts Commission's St. Louis public-art directory calls it "perhaps the most stunning of Cassilly's concrete sculptures", lists it as 30 feet tall and made of concrete, and compares its playfulness to his concrete turtles in Turtle Park. It dates the work to 1999; the Butterfly House itself opened on September 18, 1998.
