FIELD GUIDE
The story
Visit Dothan describes Mus-Quoian as one of the Whispering Giants, the carved Native American figures made by Hungarian-born sculptor Peter Toth. It describes the 20-foot statue as standing in front of the Houston-Love Memorial Public Library and as a gift from Toth, an homage to Alabama's Native American cultures. The tourism board says he asked only for the giant oak log he carved it from, and that it was dedicated to the library in 1972, with a re-dedication ceremony in 1987. It places the work in a series of 74 sculptures. Visit Dothan says the statue's serious expression reflects Toth's dedication to the injustice Native American tribes suffered at the hands of the American government. The Lazy Daisy Garden Club maintains the landscaping around it. A visitor in July 2026 reported finding it behind locked gates after 5 pm.
