FIELD GUIDE

The story

A Route 66 shield billed as the world's largest greets drivers at a bar, grill and museum on the south side of Springfield, Illinois. It hangs on two 60-foot poles that once held the sign of a Stuckey's, the roadside chain whose former building now houses Route 66 Motorheads at 600 Toronto Road. Ace Sign Co. of Springfield says it designed, manufactured and fabricated the aluminum emblem in house. A dedication was held on 14 August 2020. The Springfield State Journal-Register, as reported by Route 66 News, gave its size as 32 by 32 feet, and the sign was to be lit from below with "sign sequins" for a shimmering effect.
Ace Sign Co. describes the venue as home to the world's largest Route 66 sign, and Enjoy Illinois repeats the description. Route 66 News wrote in 2020 that it looked bigger than the shield outside the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma, but added: "until someone with a tape measure confirms it, no one will truly know."

WHAT TO EXPECT
The shield is mounted at the entrance of a bar, grill and museum complex and, according to the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway in 2024, is easily viewed from Interstate 55. A 30-foot Big Ron figure was added beneath it in August 2024. Meals and the museum are a separate business visit.
ACCESS
Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill, 600 Toronto Road, Springfield, Illinois, near Interstate 55 exit 90. A private business, so the sign is best viewed from outside; the venue's own hours apply to going inside.
