FIELD GUIDE
The story
Before sculptor Bob Roach built the Mothman, he went looking for people who said they had seen it.
The statue stands on Main Street in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, beside the Mothman Museum. It is stainless steel and about 12 feet tall. Reports of a large winged figure around Point Pleasant drew attention in November 1966, according to West Virginia Explorer, and John Keel's 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies later became a 2002 film. WV MetroNews reports that Point Pleasant officials commissioned Roach a year after the film's release; West Virginia Explorer says Charles Humphreys, then executive director of Main Street Point Pleasant, wanted a permanent attraction that would keep drawing visitors once interest in the movie faded. The statue was unveiled downtown in 2003.
