FIELD GUIDE
The story
When sculptor Erik Blome watched his clam fisherman go up on Muscatine's riverfront in 2006, he judged its height by the traffic. "Thousands of people are going to see it from the road," he told the Muscatine Journal. The bronze figure holds a pair of clamming forks that cross above his head; TravelAwaits describes him standing in a clam-filled boat and gives the statue's height as 23 feet.
The subject is local. According to the Mississippi Valley Traveler, Muscatine was the pearl button manufacturing centre of the world in the early 1900s, and the buttons were made from mussels harvested from the Mississippi River.
