FIELD GUIDE
The story
At Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware, a monument the speedway gives as 46 feet high looms over Victory Plaza with a full-size NASCAR Cup Series car clamped in its right hand. The speedway, nicknamed the Monster Mile, calls the figure Miles.
According to the speedway, the figure was built over 144 days at ACI Composites in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, arrived at Dover on 25 April 2008 and was dedicated on 14 May 2008, with NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon present. The track gives its weight as 40,000 pounds and describes it as the world's largest fiberglass structure outside a sports stadium. It adds that at 46 feet it stands almost 10 feet taller than Fenway Park's Green Monster. The base is 7 feet high and 60 feet across. Plaques there honour all of Dover's race winners, with marquee plaques for Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon and David Pearson.
