FIELD GUIDE
The story
Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, calls itself the Musky Capital of the World, and Marty is the 18-foot fish that says so from the roadside. He stands outside the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce office on Park Street (Highway M).
The town’s tourism site says the phrase was coined in the 1930s by a Chicago-based sportswriter, and that Boulder Junction kept using it for decades even after other resort communities in Wisconsin and the Midwest claimed it. In 1971 the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office issued a registered trademark for “Boulder Junction, The Musky Capital of the World”. The site adds that nearly 200 lakes lie within 10 miles of downtown, many designated Class A musky waters by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
