FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Smithsonian American Art Museum lists Jonathan Borofsky's Man with Briefcase, a Cor-Ten steel silhouette made in 1987 to 1988, at the exterior, east side, of its building. The museum's record gives its size as 320 inches high (about 26 feet 8 inches), 94½ inches wide and 2¾ inches deep.
The museum describes the figure as portraying an urban Everyman. It says Borofsky was inspired in 1979 by a newspaper advertisement for men's suits and went on to make the archetypal office worker a recurring theme in his work. The number "3277542" on the figure's leg, the museum explains, reflects the artist's habit of "signing" his pieces with a number from a continuous sequence.
