The Mammoth Orange is a giant orange-shaped refreshment stand built about 1947 in Chowchilla that later served drivers on Highway 99 at Fairmead until it closed around 2007. It was restored by Rotary clubs and moved to the Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County; a September 2023 ribbon-cutting was planned.

FIELD GUIDE
The story
A fruit-shaped burger stand that once served drivers on Highway 99 was taken in by a fossil museum in Madera County. Local historian Dan Carrion wrote in 2020 that the Mammoth Orange was built around 1947 in Chowchilla and later moved to a spot near Avenue 22½ and Highway 99 at Fairmead, where it stayed until freeway expansion forced its removal around 2007. He called it the last Giant Orange in operation on Highway 99, which had at least 16 such oranges. A sister stand, the Whoa Boy Giant Orange, was built in 1941 and torn down in 1999.
In September 2023 the Madera Tribune reported that the original closed in 2007 and was abandoned in a storage yard; The Business Journal gave 2008. In September 2023 The Business Journal reported that the Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County had restored the 20-foot orange as a concession stand, with $50,000 in donations from the Chowchilla, Madera and Madera Sunrise Rotary Clubs. A ribbon-cutting and fundraising dinner was set for 23 September 2023. The museum's website describes the orange as nearly restored and invites donations toward the restoration.
