FIELD GUIDE

The story

A mallard with a seven-metre wingspan stands in the village of Andrew, Alberta, about 116 km (72 mi) northeast of Edmonton. Travel Alberta lists it as the World's Largest Mallard Duck, weighing one tonne.
According to Travel Alberta, the duck was built in 1992 to recognize nearby wetlands and lakes, which house large breeding populations of mallards and other waterfowl. The listing gives its wingspan as 7 m (23 ft). It gives no height or length, and it does not name a builder or an artist. Go East of Edmonton, a regional tourism site, also gives a "1-ton" duck with a 23-foot wingspan, erected in 1992 as a commemorative quack to the duck breeding grounds of the local wetlands.
