FIELD GUIDE

The story

Major the Bull is a bronze bull in the middle of downtown Durham, and Discover Durham says it is good luck to rub his horns. Discover Durham describes the statue as 10 feet tall and one ton, commissioned in 2003 by Central Carolina Bank (now Truist) and cast by Liberty Arts as an icon for the city. It is named for George “Major” Watts Hill, whom Discover Durham describes as an executive at CCB Bank and a Durham City Councilmember. WRAL reported in April 2025 that the artists Michael Waller and Leah Foushee-Waller created it. Liberty Arts co-president Jim Jenson told WRAL that it was the first larger-than-life bronze for Liberty Arts and that the organisation and the sculpture “were born on the same day” twenty-one years earlier. A birthday party at The Bullpen in Durham’s social district, with a sing-along, was planned for 18 April 2025.
