FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 35-foot rocking chair stands outside a furniture store on Canal Road in Gulfport, Mississippi. According to a November 2025 Family Destinations Guide article, it is made of Southern pine and is a scaled-up version of the store's Magnolia rocker, and the article gives a dedication date of 27 January 1995. WLOX reported in 2007 that the family-run business built it in 1995 from Southern pine, and that the founder had long dreamed of building a very large rocking chair. His son was quoted: "his dream was, when we started the business, to build a large rocking chair." The chair became a landmark that drew photographers and slowed traffic. WLOX noted that photographs in the store showed the chair knocked down by hurricane winds, and in December 2007 Hampton Hotels restored it through its Save-A-Landmark programme and gave the family a $20,000 cheque for upkeep. The 2025 article says it has weathered hurricanes, including Katrina, and still stands.
