FIELD GUIDE
The story
In Shamrock, the Magnolia gas station is a restored 1929 filling station that sits beside the Pioneer West Museum and just steps from the Route 66 corridor, according to the Texas Historical Commission's travel directory. KFDA reported in 2024 that construction started in March 1929 and was completed that May. A Shamrock city councilman told KFDA that the corner was once the main part of town, and that Route 66 later drew business away, particularly after the U Drop Inn opened in 1936. He said the last reference he could find, from 1945, shows the building still operating as a gas station. Texas Escapes describes it as the other vintage filling station in Shamrock and describes three well-preserved gravity-feed pumps. In March 2026 the Texas Department of Transportation said the restored station appears on the covers of the 2026 Texas State Travel Guide and Official Travel Map, and called it one of the most iconic stops along Texas' stretch of Route 66.
